Botanical History On This Day
1533 Birth of Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, French Renaissance philosopher renowned for essays blending anecdote and wisdom. He wished to be found “planting my cabbages, neither worrying about it nor the unfinished gardening.”
1828 On this day, Frederick William Beechey wrote to William Jackson Hooker apologizing for the poor botanical specimens caused by a collector who preferred playing violin over collecting plants during an expedition.
1844 The milky sap of Sumac was praised as an excellent indelible ink; writing with its sap yields a jet black that cannot be washed out.
1877 Birth of André Simon, French wine merchant and writer who celebrated beans for their enduring qualities in The Concise Encyclopedia of Gastronomy.
