Botanical History On This Day

1717 Birth of Catharina Helena Dörrien, German botanist, writer, and artist. She created over 1,400 botanical illustrations and authored Flora for Orange-Nassau, naming new lichens and breaking barriers for women in science societies of her time.

1848 Birth of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, American sculptor famed for Civil War monuments like Abraham Lincoln: The Man. He was known for his poetic outlook, saying, “What garlic is to salad, insanity is to art.”

1877 Birth of Lenore Elizabeth Mulets, American children’s author and poet. Her works, including Flower Stories and Stories of Birds, invite readers to cherish nature’s familiar blooms and feathered friends as old acquaintances.
