Botanical History On This Day
1779 Birth of Joel Roberts Poinsett, American physician, botanist, and statesman. He introduced the Poinsettia, or “Skin Flower,” from Mexico to the U.S., where it became beloved as a symbol of love and loyalty with brilliant crimson blooms.
1859 Birth of Sholem Aleichem, Yiddish author whose stories inspired the musical Fiddler on the Roof. He wisely noted, “If you want to learn how to grow cabbages, ask the gardener, not the goat.”
1905 Birth of Geoffrey Grigson, British poet and naturalist known for his poetry magazine New Verse and skeptical reflections on nature’s mysteries.
1905 Birth of Ayn Rand, philosopher and author best known for The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Her philosophy of Objectivism advocated individualism and laissez-faire capitalism.
1887 Birth of Charles E. Bessey, American botanist and educator instrumental in founding state experiment stations under the Hatch Act, promoting the motto, “Science with Practice.”
