Botanical History On This Day

1606 Birth of Edmund Waller, English poet and politician known for his famous carpe diem poem Go, Lovely Rose, urging the rose to remind us of fleeting beauty and love.

1616 Birth of Mathias de l'Obel, Flemish botanist and physician, first to distinguish monocots from dicots. The Lobelia plant is named in his honor, admired for its delicate blue blossoms, and favored by pollinators despite its toxicity.

1880 Birth of Muriel Wheldale Onslow, English biochemist who researched flower color inheritance using snapdragons. Her pioneering work earned worldwide acclaim and inspired the play Blooming Snapdragons.

1899 Birth of Yury Olesha, Russian novelist celebrated for his poetic prose and rich metaphors, as in Envy, where he likens his veins to a blooming tree, symbolizing life’s changing seasons.
