Botanical History On This Day
1810 Birth of William Griffith, English botanist and naturalist. Despite his youthful impatience that led to radical changes at the Calcutta Botanical Garden, his tenure ended amid controversy, and he died young on the return voyage from Malacca.
1847 Birth of Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, German-English orchidologist and nurseryman. Known as the “King of Orchids,” Sander expanded orchid collecting globally and was honored with the rare and beautiful Vanda Sanderiana, often referred to as the Queen of Philippine Orchids.
1949 Planting of a flowering plum tree in honor of Luther Burbank in Santa Rosa, California. Burbank wished no monument but a tree to mark his grave, beneath which lies his beloved dog Bonita, creating a living legacy in nature.
