Botanical History On This Day
1763 Birth of William Cobbett, English writer, farmer, and MP who championed agrarian reform through his vivid horse-drawn rural explorations. He believed that gardening taught patience and fostered a connection to the land.
1845 Birth of Wilhelm Friedrich Philipp Pfeffer, German botanist and plant physiologist. His early apothecary training fueled pioneering studies, including the Pfeffer pot, which was used for measuring osmotic pressure in plant cells.
1874 Birth of Karl Foerster, influential German plant breeder and garden designer. Known for his work with Karl Foerster grass and a preference for hardy perennials, he helped shape the New German Garden Style, famously saying, “Grasses are the hair of Mother Earth.”
1892 Birth of Vita Sackville-West, English author and garden creator of Sissinghurst Castle’s iconic gardens, including the challenging White Garden and defiant 11,000 daffodil planting during WWII.
