Botanical History On This Day
1709 Birth of Georg Wilhelm Steller, German botanist, zoologist, and explorer, a pioneer of Alaskan natural history. On Vitus Bering’s expedition, he was among the first to explore Alaska and advocated eating local greens to prevent scurvy, saving many lives during their shipwreck on Bering Island.
1719 Death of Jean-Baptiste Le Blond, French architect and garden designer. He famously said, “A garden should always look bigger than it really is” in his influential book The Theory and Practice of Gardening.
1788 Birth of Joseph von Eichendorff, German Romantic poet and writer. His novella Memoir of a Good-for-Nothing features a miller's son who becomes a palace gardener, blending nature and fairy tale enchantment in his work.
1841 Birth of Ina Donna Coolbrith, California’s first Poet Laureate and beloved writer called the “Sweet Singer of California” for her lyrical celebrations of nature’s seasons in the San Francisco Bay Area.
