Spring Break Next Week
Hi there. The show is on spring break next week. New episodes will resume on March 21.
Botanical History On This Day
1775 Birth of Pierre Jean François Turpin, French botanist and illustrator. Self-taught in botanical art and influenced by Redouté, Turpin created over 6,000 exquisite watercolors and even devised a fictional plant, the Urplant, for Goethe.
1811 Birth of Katherine Sophia Kane, Irish botanist and horticulturist. Author of Ireland’s first national flora, The Irish Flora, she became the first woman elected to the Botanical Society of Edinburgh and had a unique scholarly bond with her husband through Greek correspondence.
1877 Birth of Jean White-Haney, Australian botanist and pioneering scientific leader. She courageously tackled the invasive Prickly Pear problem using biological control methods, proving the pollinator value of this remarkable cactus.

Today's Botanic Spark
1952 Birth of Douglas Adams, famed English author and environmentalist. His witty work The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and thoughtful writings like Last Chance to See remind us of the preciousness of life and nature, famously saying, “Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”
