Botanical History On This Day
Today is the feast day of St. Catherine of Sweden for Roman Catholics. The lesser celandine (Ficaria verna), known as St. Catherine's flower, brightens spring woodlands with its cheerful yellow blossoms. St. Catherine is the patron saint of women who suffer miscarriages.
1640 Death of Thomas Carew, English Cavalier poet. His poem The Spring celebrates the thawing earth and the awakening of nature with lively bees, cuckoos, and swallows.
1822 Founding of the New-York Horticultural Society, America’s first horticultural society. Despite early challenges and fading membership, the legacy of its founders paved the way for the New York Botanical Garden’s creation in the 1890s.
1900 Birth of Christine Johanna Buisman, Dutch botanist. She identified the fungus causing Dutch Elm Disease in North America, leading to the breeding of resistant elm clones named in her honor.
