Botanical History On This Day

1699 Birth of John Bartram, American botanist and explorer who founded America’s first botanical garden. Linnaeus called him “the greatest natural botanist in the world.” His curiosity began with a simple daisy, sparking a lifelong passion for studying plants on his farm and beyond.

1907 On this day, a boys-only school garden began in Rhode Island. Despite challenges like theft, the garden taught the boys about growing vegetables, courtesy, and responsibility, even reducing truancy while inspiring many to create gardens at home.

1913 Birth of James C. Rose, American landscape architect and author. Rose believed a garden was an immersive experience—“something while still out of doors”—beyond just plants or hardscape, redefining garden design with creative vision.

1923 Birth of Norman Thelwell, English cartoonist famed for his witty pony and horse illustrations. In his book From a Plank Bridge by a Pool, he mused poetically on the majestic trees that silently witness generations.
