Botanical History On This Day
1682 Baptism of Mark Catesby, English naturalist and artist. He published the first comprehensive account of North American flora and fauna in The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, innovatively pairing text and detailed illustrations in English and French. His work revealed the ancient Magnolia’s beetle pollination and medical uses.
1733 Birth of Joseph Priestley, English chemist and polymath. His ecosystem experiment with a mouse and mint laid the foundation for ecological science. Inventor of carbonated water and laughing gas, he also pioneered the use of vegetable gum as an eraser.
1834 Birth of William Morris, British designer, poet, and socialist. Leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement, his nature-inspired textile and wallpaper designs, such as honeysuckle and chrysanthemum, remain iconic. His poetic tapestry celebrates the orchard’s cycle from harvest to spring promise.

1993 The Krider Nurseries World's Fair Garden in Middlebury, Indiana, was donated to the town. Originating from Vernon Krider’s humble berry farm, the nursery became America’s largest mail-order grower after its acclaimed 1933 display at the Chicago World's Fair—featuring Japanese and Dutch gardens—and today remains a vibrant community garden.
