Botanical History On This Day

March 25 marks Lady Day, the Feast of the Annunciation, honoring the Virgin Mary. The Marigold, or "Mary's gold," symbolizes strength, light, and lost love in the language of flowers. Both its flowers and leaves are edible and have medicinal skin-healing properties.

1641 Birth of Nehemiah Grew, English botanist known as the Father of Plant Anatomy. His detailed microscopic drawings of plants and pioneering study of pollen transformed the field of botanical science.

1890 On this day, João Barbosa Rodrigues established the Herbarium at the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, which now houses over 750,000 Brazilian plant specimens amid 350 acres of tropical flora and towering royal palms.

2021 The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Asia’s largest tulip garden, officially opened in Kashmir. Its 74 acres flourish with 65 varieties of tulips and spring bulbs, drawing visitors annually during the blooming season.
