Botanical History On This Day

1895 Birth of Spencer Woolley Kimball, American religious and civic leader who also loved gardening. He advised, “Where you have a plot of land, however small, plant a garden. Staying close to the soil is good for the soul.”

1906 Birth of Jean Galbraith, Australian botanist and writer celebrated for her wildflower guides and heartfelt garden writings. She believed every flower held a remembered story and embraced imperfection in the garden as a source of joy.

1928 On this day, Margarita Grace Phipps hosted the first meeting of The Garden Club of Palm Beach. The club has since championed public gardens and created the innovative tidal garden to protect landscapes from king tides.
