Botanical History On This Day
1779 Birth of William Baldwin, American botanist and physician. He explored Georgia, Florida, Latin America, and the West Indies. Baldwin’s milkwort (Polygala balduinii) honors his legacy on the banks of the Missouri River, where he is buried, though his grave was lost to flooding.
1913 Birth of R. S. Thomas, Welsh poet and Anglican priest. His poem The Garden reflects on nature as a refuge and a place to find love and solitude.
1969 Completion of Yûrin no Niwa, a kimono-inspired garden in Kyoto, Japan. Designed by Mirei Shigemori and later relocated and expanded by his student Iwamoto Toshio, its water-filled kimono-shaped pond celebrates silk dye artistry with vibrant stone colors.
2021 As COVID lockdowns ended, Out and Out published five garden prep tips for March 29th, including lawn care, washing winter grime away, arranging seating, spring planting, and adding finishing touches for alfresco enjoyment.
