Botanical History On This Day

1568 Birth of Henry Wotton, English writer and diplomat. Fascinated by Italian gardens, he described the “garden of surprise” in his Elements of Architecture, where every turn "magically transported" the visitor to a new delight.

1844 Birth of Paul-Marie Verlaine, French poet known for Symbolism and Decadence. His poem Clair de Lune, begins, “Your soul is a sealed garden,” inspiring Debussy’s famous musical piece.

1853 Birth of Vincent van Gogh, Dutch post-impressionist painter. Lover of nature who said, “If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” Despite his tragic end, his sunflowers remain iconic across the art world.

2003 The Fort Worth Star-Telegram spotlighted the ambitious effort to standardize plant names, a $100-million, decade-long project led by Missouri Botanical Garden and global partners, culminating with The Plant List in 2010 containing 1.25 million names.
