Botanical History On This Day

1621 Birth of Andrew Marvell, English poet and politician. Friend of John Milton, he penned the famous garden verse, “I have a garden of my own / But so with Roses overgrown / And Lilies, that you would it guess / To be a little wilderness.”

1824 Birth of Dietrich Brandis, Father of Forestry in India and Tropical Forestry. He pioneered sustainable forest management, famously inventorying teak trees from an elephant’s back despite malaria and brain surgery. He founded the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, honored by the genus Brandisia.

1848 Birth of William Waldorf Astor, American-British businessman and philanthropist. He transformed Hever Castle’s grounds with elaborate gardens, lakes, mazes, and topiary chessmen. The Italian Garden, featuring colonnades and fountains, remains a breathtaking legacy completed in just four years.

1924 Birth of Leo Buscaglia, American author and motivational speaker known as “Dr. Love.” Inspired by his father’s garden, he wrote, “A single rose can be my garden; a single friend, my world,” celebrating simple miracles like garlic and friendship.

Today's Botanic Spark

1962 On this day, under Bunny Mellon’s leadership, the White House rose garden was redesigned despite cutting a vital underground line. Robert Kennedy recalled Bunny as “a little figure with a bandana on her head” tending the roses. The stunning garden, featuring magnolias and varieties from across the U.S., was unveiled twenty-four days later to acclaim and Presidential delight.
