Botanical History On This Day
1802 Birth of Dorothea Lynde Dix, Boston activist who revolutionized mental health care. Inspired by English “moral treatment” gardens, she championed humane asylums, a radical departure from past practices. Today, Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh blooms with daffodils and sunflowers, honoring her legacy. She also authored The Garland of Flora, celebrating the secret language of flowers.
1928 Birth of Maya Angelou, iconic American poet and activist. Her words often reflect nature’s quiet power, as in her verse about the stillness of gardens at night, recalling the peace that makes smiles bloom.
1929 Birth of James A. Duke, American botanist known for his Handbook of Medicinal Herbs and The Green Pharmacy. Revered for his plant databases, Duke famously advised about dandelions: “If you can’t beat them, eat them.”
1944 Bombing damaged the Botanical Garden in Bucharest, destroying two-thirds of its herbarium specimens. Founded through the dedication of botanist Dimitrie Brandza, the garden remains a vibrant living lab and refuge on 42 sprawling acres.
