Botanical History On This Day

1684 Jan Davidsz. de Heem, the Dutch still-life master, died. His fantastical bouquets defied the seasons, uniting blooms that would never meet in real life.

1785 John James Audubon, American naturalist, artist, and bird lover, was born. A robin’s nest at his grave tells its own story.

1798 Eugène Delacroix, French Romantic painter, was born. His earliest surviving flower painting brims with dahlias.

1822 Frederick Law Olmsted, father of American landscape architecture, was born. He gave us Central Park and the very idea of green sanctuaries for all.
