Botanical History On This Day

1814 Charles MacKay, Scottish poet and songwriter, was born; he wrote tender lines in praise of the modest Meadow-sweet.

1851 Alice Morse Earle, American historian and garden writer, was born; her books Old Time Gardens and Sun Dials and Roses of Yesterday preserve the charm of turn-of-the-century gardens.

1902 Thomas “Tommy” Dolliver Church, California landscape architect, was born; he pioneered the California Style, blending outdoor living with timeless design.

1904 Cecil Day-Lewis, Irish-born British Poet Laureate and father of actor Daniel Day-Lewis, was born; his poems capture the fleeting seasons of life.
