Botanical History On This Day

Roman Calendar Floralia, the six-day festival to honor Flora, goddess of flowers and flowering crops, opened with hopes for bloom, bounty, and a generous grape harvest.

1834 Harry Bolus, South African botanist, artist, and philanthropist, was born; founder and benefactor of the Bolus Herbarium and patron of botanical study in Cape Town.

1852 Henri Frederic Amiel, Swiss philosopher and poet, penned a luminous journal entry on spring’s languor—birds, sunlight, and fields filling the heart.

1947 Bonnie Marranca, critic, publisher, and writer, was born; in American Garden Writing she praises gardeners who invest spaces with daydreams.
