Botanical History On This Day
St. Robert's Day — Saint Robert of Molesme, 11th-century abbot and herbalist, whose name may live on in the little Wild Geranium, Herb Robert.
1852 Henri Frederic Amiel, Swiss philosopher and poet, wrote in his journal about the spring miracle of a flowering corchorus.
1869 Agnes Chase, fearless American botanist and agrostologist, was born. She devoted her life to grasses and made her mark at the Smithsonian.
1954 Jerry Seinfeld, American comedian, was born — and once quipped about the absurdity of gifting flowers.
2017 The Brooklyn Botanic Garden announced its cherry blossom festival, proving nature’s timing is always her own.
