Botanical History On This Day
1830 Thomas Edward Brown, Victorian poet and theologian of the Isle of Man, was born. His gentle garden verse continues to delight, reminding us that flowers and faith often grow from the same soil.
1833 Richard Watson Dixon, English clergyman and poet, came into the world. He had a gift for capturing the judgment and beauty of May in lyrical verse, painting the season in words as vivid as any bloom.
1890 Christopher Morley, American journalist, novelist, and essayist, was born. Morley’s wit and reflections on springtime still echo like a breeze through a blossoming orchard—fresh, lively, and full of charm.
1921 Mavis Lilian Batey, English Codebreaker and garden historian, was born. After helping to change the course of WWII, she turned her keen intellect to championing the preservation of historic landscapes, ensuring gardens of the past would be enjoyed by future generations.
