Botanical History On This Day

1815 Mary Russell Mitford contrasted her grandmothers’ stiff “beau-pots” with her own carefree, nature-first bouquets—ushering in a looser, lovelier language of flowers.

1896 Poet Nora Perry died; her verses—especially “The Coming of Spring”—still warm gardeners with lengthening days and bloom-bright hope.

1906 Philanthropist Enid Annenberg Haupt was born; the “fairy godmother of American horticulture” later saved iconic public gardens and glasshouses for us all.

1823 Naturalist William Bartram noted towhees nesting in the garden and birds feasting on aphids—May’s small dramas in a living laboratory.

1907 Daphne du Maurier was born; her novels twine with gardens—rhododendrons, azaleas, and hothouse orchids—casting blossoms as characters.
