Botanical History On This Day

National Pick Strawberries Day Strawberries—our strewn berries—wear their seeds on the outside (about 200 each), belong to the rose family, and fuel a billion-pound California harvest.

1846 Ludwig Leichhardt wrote of drowned pack-horses and thousands of lost specimens—an explorer’s peril in Australia before his final disappearance.

1858 Joseph Breck on Tulips advised awnings for peak bloom around May 20, careful lifting in June, and shared 19th-century prices for bulbs.

1922 Pi Beta Phi (WVU) planned a Japanese spring party with lanterns, blossoms, and wooden programs—May 20 marked in style.

Present Day Blackville, South Carolina kicks off “cuke” season with daily cucumber auctions beginning about May 20.
