Botanical History On This Day

1707 Carl Linnaeus — Father of Taxonomy, whose Species Plantarum (1753) standardized binomials — also flipped Celsius’s scale, honored the Commelin brothers with Commelina, and adored the twinflower of Lapland.

1799 Thomas Hood, English poet of blooming springs and stark Novembers, was born; his verses scatter gardens across the page.

1843 Georgiana Molloy, pioneering botanical collector in Western Australia, was born; her exquisitely prepared specimens and seed won praise from botanists abroad.

1905 Louisa Yeomans King advised pairing pale yellow evening-primrose ‘Afterglow’ with obedient plant, white mugwort, and ‘Primrose Stella’ for an August worth waiting for.
