Botanical History On This Day
1771 Birth of Xavier Bichat, French anatomist and pathologist. Though not a gardener in the traditional sense, his meticulous study of tissues laid a foundation for modern biology that rippled into plant science as well.
1776 Birth of Henri Dutrochet, French physician, botanist, and physiologist. Dutrochet is remembered for his pioneering work on osmosis—a discovery that forever changed how we understand the secret workings of plants.
1907 Birth of Astrid Lindgren, Swedish writer of fiction and screenplays. Generations know her as the creator of *Pippi Longstocking*, but Lindgren’s tales often carried a love for nature and gardens tucked between the lines.
1908 Birth of Harrison Salisbury, American journalist. His words captured the world’s great upheavals, though one imagines he may have found solace in the quiet of a garden, as so many writers do.
