Botanical History On This Day
1643 Birth of Jean Chardin, French jeweler and traveler. Known for his extensive journeys through Persia and India, Chardin’s writings capture the plants, gardens, and landscapes he encountered along the way—windows into a world unfamiliar to European readers of his time.
1845 Death of Elizabeth Fox, also known as Baroness Holland, English political hostess and passionate flower lover. Her famous Holland House garden became a gathering place for both politicians and plants, where dahlias—then new to England—first dazzled visitors.
1964 Death of Denys Zirngiebel, Swiss-born naturalist, florist, and plant breeder. Zirngiebel’s legacy lives on in the blooms he cultivated, many of which carried his eye for both scientific precision and artistic beauty.
2001 On this day, the French film Amelie was released in the United States. The whimsical story, set against the backdrop of Paris, features charming garden imagery and tiny acts of care that feel very much like tending plants—small gestures that grow into something transformative.
