Botanical History On This Day
1627 Birth of John Ray, English naturalist and writer. Often called the father of English natural history, Ray’s careful observations of plants laid the groundwork for later botanical classification. His legacy reminds us how much patience and precision can shape our understanding of the natural world.
1799 Birth of Amos Bronson Alcott, American teacher, writer, Transcendentalist, and reformer. Alcott believed gardens were classrooms of the soul—where children could learn philosophy through the rhythm of sowing, tending, and reaping.
1832 Birth of Louisa May Alcott, American writer and poet. Best remembered for Little Women, Louisa also filled her works with garden imagery, celebrating the restorative power of flowers and the solace of green spaces.
1978 Death of Edward Hummel, American plantsman and hybridizer. Hummel’s passion gave us dazzling daylilies and new plant introductions, proof of how a gardener’s hand can alter and enrich the palette of our landscapes.

Today's Botanic Spark
1843 Birth of Gertrude Jekyll ("Jee-kul"), British horticulturist, garden designer, photographer, writer, and artist. Jekyll’s painterly approach to planting transformed English gardens into living works of art—harmonies of color, texture, and scent that continue to inspire designers across the globe.
