Botanical History On This Day
1597 On this day, The Herbal by English herbalist John Gerard was published. Brimming with descriptions of over a thousand plants, Gerard’s book brought the world of herbs and healing into households across England. Gardeners of the time clutched it like a bible for planting, brewing, and curing.
1826 Birth of Sereno Watson, American botanist and curator of the Gray Herbarium at Harvard University. Watson helped catalogue America’s flora, ensuring that countless specimens and their stories were preserved for generations of gardeners and scientists to come.
1833 Birth of Ellsworth Jerome Hill, Presbyterian minister, writer, and American botanist. His devotion to wild plants led him to discover and describe new species—proof that a keen eye and a gentle spirit can leave a lasting mark on the natural world.
1945 Birth of Bette Midler, American singer, actress, and comedian. Known as the “Divine Miss M,” Midler is also a devoted environmentalist whose work through the New York Restoration Project has planted trees and gardens across the city, turning gray corners green again.

1955 On this day, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, after refusing to give up her seat on a bus. Her quiet act of defiance grew into a movement that would bloom across America—proof that courage, like a seed, can take root and change the landscape forever.
