Botanical History On This Day

1796 William Casson, English botanist, seed merchant, and local historian, was born. Casson dedicated his life to both plants and people, helping preserve the botanical knowledge of his time while running a successful seed business. His dual legacy reminds gardeners that every plant sold and every seed saved is also a story passed down.

1854 Annie Lorrain Smith, British lichenologist and textbook author, was born. Annie became one of the foremost authorities on lichens—a patient and often overlooked study. Her work demonstrates that even the humblest organisms, clinging quietly to rock and bark, deserve attention and admiration.

1865 Neltje Blanchan, American scientific historian and nature writer, was born. Through her popular books, Neltje blended science and sentiment, making the natural world approachable for ordinary readers. Her work invites us to pause, notice, and cherish the beauty in everyday wildflowers.

1905 Katharine Stewart was writing in her garden journal—a practice that would later inspire her beloved book, A Garden in the Hills. Through her writing, Katharine celebrated the seasonal rhythms of Highland gardening, weaving practical lessons with lyrical observations.

1813 Ludwig Leichhardt, German explorer and naturalist, was born. Known as “the Prince of Explorers,” Leichhardt charted Australia’s interior, documenting its flora and fauna with care. His daring expeditions remind us that much of gardening is, at heart, an act of exploration—learning the land, its climate, and the plants that call it home.
