Botanical History On This Day
1806 William Wordsworth received a life-changing invitation from Lady Margaret Willes Beaumont to design and build a winter garden in an old gravel quarry. The unusual request inspired what Wordsworth later described as the longest letter he ever wrote, a garden design that wove poetry and horticulture together.
1887 Georgia O'Keeffe was born. Over a career spanning decades, she created more than 900 works of art, forever changing how we see flowers through her bold, modernist vision and monumental floral paintings.

Today's Botanic Spark
1985 On this day, a remarkable piece of botanical history changed hands at Sotheby’s. Empress Josephine’s personal copy of Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s botanical watercolors for Les Liliacées, “The Lilies,” was sold, a reminder that gardens, like art, endure long after their caretakers are gone.
