Floralia Begins: A Week for Flora’s Favor

On this day, the Roman calendar opened the six-day revel of Floralia, paying merry court to Flora—the capricious guardian of flowers and flowering crops.

Gardeners once marked the week with garlands and laughter, sending up petitions for safe hands, brave seedlings, a bountiful harvest, and a grape vintage worthy of picnic blankets and poetry.

Flora asks for so little and gives so much: a drift of petals on a breeze, a promise tucked into each bud.
