Muriel Wheldale Onslow: Pioneer of Flower Color Genetics and Biochemical Genetics

On this day, we tip our whimsical garden hats to Muriel Wheldale Onslow, a woman whose curiosity was as vivid as the snapdragons she so loved to study.
Muriel carved her own path amid both beakers and blossoms, daring to ask questions many in her day scarcely thought women would bother to ponder.
What drew her, one wonders, from the formal corridors of Cambridge to the riotous color of the flower beds, where inheritance and pigment entwined in mystery?
Muriel’s life, much like a rare double-flowered snapdragon, was marked by resilience and flourish. She married Victor Onslow—himself the son of the fourth Earl of Onslow—whose life was forever changed by a tragic diving accident as a student at Cambridge.
Yet, within the walls of their shared existence, love thrived in a partnership of admiration and respect. Muriel, recalling him later, wrote he was “a man of amazing courage and mental vitality, and that he was an inspiration to their peers in biochemistry.”
Was there an unwritten chemistry between them, or did their shared passion for science nurture blossoms few ever witnessed?
Muriel’s research focused on the inheritance of color in snapdragons, or Antirrhinum majus (“ant-er-EYE-num MAY-jus”), those cheery cottage garden staples related to the foxglove.
What secrets did she unlock from petals of green, red, orange, yellow, white, purple, and pink?
Her groundbreaking 1907 paper explained how certain genes influence the color of flowers—not in isolation, but through a delicate, back-and-forth dance later called “epistasis”.
