The Sun Stands Still: A Gardener’s Ode to the Summer Solstice
This botanical history post was featured on The Daily Gardener podcast:
June 21st every year...
On this day, the heavens have bestowed upon us the most generous gift a gardener could desire—the summer solstice, that magnificent celestial occasion when the sun, in its infinite wisdom, chooses to linger in our skies like an honored guest reluctant to depart the season's grandest ball.
I must confess, dear readers, that there is something positively intoxicating about this longest of days. The northern hemisphere now bows toward our solar benefactor with such deliberate intent that one cannot help but feel we gardeners have been granted special favor in this cosmic arrangement.
Have you noticed how your plants stand taller today, as if preening under this exceptional attention?
This "sun-stopping" event—for that is indeed what "solstice" means in its Latin origins—presents itself when our sun reaches its furthest zenith from the equator. It is nature's most exquisite paradox: a moment of perfect stillness that simultaneously heralds tremendous growth.
One simply cannot help but marvel at how our ancestors recognized the profound significance of this day.
The Druids with their mysterious gatherings at Stonehenge, the ancient Egyptians aligning their magnificent pyramids—all paying homage to this astronomical phenomenon. And yet, I would argue that we gardeners understand its true value better than any temple priest or pharaoh ever could!
Can you envision the extraordinary industry taking place in your garden at this very moment?
Every leaf has transformed into a miniature factory, every chlorophyll-filled cell working with unprecedented vigor to convert this generous sunlight into life itself. From the most delicate seedling to your garden's most venerable specimen, all are engaged in this silent, magnificent alchemy.
I strongly recommend you consider marking this auspicious day with a solstice-inspired addition to your garden.
Sunflowers, with their faithful faces following our celestial benefactor, would be particularly appropriate.
Marigolds and calendula, too, with their sun-bright blooms, make excellent choices for commemorating this day of days.
Perhaps these extended hours of daylight might also provide the perfect opportunity to finally address that neglected corner of your garden?
There is no time quite like the present, particularly when the present arrives bearing the gift of additional sunlight!
And as twilight eventually claims its rightful place (though with considerable reluctance today), I implore you to sit amongst your beloved plants.
Feel the day's accumulated warmth rising from the soil like a contented sigh. Listen to the industrious hum of bees, making the most of nature's generosity.
Express gratitude for this magnificent cycle that brings us such abundance.
Let us raise our trowels in salute to the summer solstice, dear gardening companions!
May it flood your gardens with radiance, your spirits with delight, and your harvest baskets with plenty.
For as any gardener with a modicum of wisdom understands, from this moment forward, we begin our gentle descent toward autumn and winter. Let us, therefore, savor every precious sunbeam that graces our beloved plots!
