Dearest reader,

On this day in 1909, Eudora Alice Welty was born, destined to become one of the South’s most beloved writers and photographers.

She captured the essence of the American South with a lyrical grace that resonated far beyond her native Mississippi.

Her novel The Optimist's Daughter, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973, remains a shining testament to her insight into human nature, grief, and place.

Welty famously observed, “One place comprehended can make us understand other places better,” a truth she embodied by weaving the deep roots of Jackson, Mississippi, into her stories.

Eudora’s home and garden in Jackson are now a National Historic Landmark, lovingly restored to reflect the life she led there for seventy-six years. The garden, originally designed by her mother, Chestina, in 1925, was their shared sanctuary through decades of planting, weeding, and dreaming. It was not a show garden but a gardener’s garden — humble, alive, and cherished — exactly as Eudora wished it to remain for future generations.

In the 1930s, Eudora hosted the 'Night Blooming Cereus Club' in her moonlit garden to witness the ephemeral blossoming of this mysterious flower, the “Queen of the Night.”

Her love of nature infused her writing: over 150 different plants find mention in her works, such as the garden-inspired short story A Curtain of Green. After the loss of her father in 1931, she found solace and strength in tending the earth, later reflecting,

“No experience could have taught me more about grief or flowers, about achieving survival by going, your fingers in the ground, the limit of physical exhaustion.”

Eudora understood better than most the quiet healing power of the garden. “I like the work in the yard, never get tired, and can think out there… or maybe it’s dreaming,” she wrote to a friend.

In her lyrical prose and intimate photographs, she crafted a tender portrait of the South — a place of deep emotions, natural beauty, and enduring memories.

When next you find yourself resting among blooming lilies or watching the moonlit unfolding of petals, remember Eudora Welty — a gardener of words, a dreamer who knew that understanding a single place allows us to embrace the world more fully.
