A Niche Nursery Leaves a Legacy: Shady Acres Herb Farm

"The Mieselers owned and operated Shady Acres since the mid-1970s, and for almost four decades, Shady Acres was the place for plants and herbs."

June 12, 2016

On this day, the Shady Acres Herb Farm closed in Chaska, Minnesota, after 39 years.

Jim and Theresa Mieseler started Shady Acres Herb Farm with seedlings grown in Dixie cups in their basement.

The Mieselers owned and operated Shady Acres since the mid-1970s, and for almost four decades, Shady Acres was the place for plants and herbs.

Over time, the Mieselers cultivated and sold over 600 culinary herbs and vegetable varieties.

Since the closing of their farm, Shady Acres has been moving in a different direction. They're now committed to teaching others about growing plants, and they do that in their monthly newsletter.
You can also check out their website at Shadyacres.com.

Theresa's career with plants began long ago with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

She was put in charge of the herb garden, and she fondly remembers telling her boss,

"I don't know what an herb is..."
